Scary Weather

Over this past week and weekend, we've been experiencing some pretty nasty weather.

Let's start back at Thursday.
When I stepped outside to go out to the bus, not a drop of rain was falling from the sky. About 30 seconds later, and half way to my bus stop, KA BOOM. The rain starts pouring down, at apparently more than 2 inches an hour. Plus there was lightning striking right in front of us. We decided that it's not a very good idea to sit for 5 minutes waiting for the bus out there, so I got a ride, thankfully.

When I got home we were still in the storm. I'd say the worst part. I got home, and sat down to study. It was pretty dark outside. I looked up at the TV, and the guy was talking about some low circulation or something. No big deal, I thought.

Then, a moment later, they were saying there were tornadoes heading straight for our town. Uh-oh, I thought. Then the tornado sirens started sounding. I got in a panic, trying to get out to the tornado shelter in time. By they time I had my shoes on, they had turned off the tornado sirens and said that the tornado had already headed north, thankfully.

Had it not headed north so soon, it probably wouldn't have effected us much as it was actually pretty far on the other side of town.

We found out later that, even though it didn't damage our town, it did damage a different town. Roofs were torn off of houses, and two people were thrown out of their trailer. They survived, though.

The next day, I was in the state Geography Bee. The weather was just rainy, like before, in the morning.

When we got there I had to sit next to a person which, not to be rude, but they sat on my seat too, since their chair was not quite large enough for them. That was pretty squished and awkward. But I did great anyways, and if I do it again next year, the chances of that happening are awfully slim.

Anyways, afterwards we drove back. We sat in the car awhile while my dad interviewed someone. At first it was just fine. But then lightning began to strike ALL OVER. Not the worst lightning, I found out later that day, but still, it was pretty freaky.

We went inside his building and found out there was a tornado watch in our area. How nice.

We headed home. After awhile the rain began pouring down amazingly hard. We got AT LEAST 4 inches that day.

There was some thunder and lightning for awhile, just like normal.

But then, the lightning got closer. Too close for comfort I'd say. Think across the street type close.

We figured out that, during that period of time, the farthest strike was 1/5 a mile away. For the nearest, it must've only been a few feet, since there was absolutely no time between strike and thunder. NONE.

There was flooding like crazy. The roads were already deep enough with water that you couldn't drive, but even if you tried all you would be driving on would be potholes. And the creek right behind our house was flash flooding. That was interesting.

In some towns near us there were a few tornadoes, but I didn't hear of much more after that. Finally the weather had began to calm down, thank goodness. Al though it sounds like more may become soon, which I guess is just part of living on Route 66.
